Differentiation rules practice question 8
Let . Which expression is ?
is a quotient. Work out yourself with the rule for quotients, simplify it, and only then compare with the choices.
The quotient rule is . Order matters in the numerator.
With and , the numerator is . Expand it fully.

Worked solution
Strategy
Apply the quotient rule with the numerator differentiated first, then expand and collect so the answer can be compared against the options.
Working
Identify the parts. The denominator differentiates to 1.
Apply (u′v − uv′)/v². The subtraction runs in that order and cannot be swapped.
Expand, distributing the minus sign across both terms of the bracket.
Collect like terms.
Answer
The answer is (x² − 4x − 1)/(x − 2)².
Check
For large x, q(x) ≈ x + 2 has slope near 1, and only (x² − 4x − 1)/(x − 2)² tends to 1.
Where this goes wrong
Reversing the numerator to uv′ − u′v, which produces the negative of the correct derivative. Remember the numerator starts with the derivative of the top.
