Power functions and first sketches practice question 4
Let , with in radians. Which term dominates close to , and which dominates for large ?
Answer it twice, once for near and once for large . In each region, which of and is bigger in size?

Worked solution
Strategy
Compare the sizes of the two terms in each region. Near 0, sine behaves like x itself; far away, sine is bounded while x³ is not.
Working
Close to the origin sin x ≈ x, so the sine term is about 4x, hundreds of times bigger than x³ here.
The graph leaves the origin along the line of slope 4.
Far away the sine term is trapped between −4 and 4, while x³ grows without bound.
So for large |x| the graph is y = x³ with a small wobble around it.
Answer
The answer is Near 0 the 4 sin x term dominates and the graph looks like y = 4x; for large |x| the x cubed term dominates..
Check
At x = 0.02, f ≈ 0.0800, almost exactly 4x, while at x = 5, f ≈ 121.2, close to x³ = 125 and far from 4 sin x.
Where this goes wrong
Deciding by the coefficients, or by “sine is small”. Near 0, 4 sin x behaves like 4x, which beats x³; only far from the origin does being trapped between −4 and 4 make the sine term negligible.
