Curve sketching practice question 7
Which statement describes the horizontal asymptotes of the graph of ?
Take the limit at each end on its own. When is large and negative, what sign does the top have, and what sign does the bottom have?
For large , behaves like . Treat and separately: in one case and in the other.

Worked solution
Strategy
Divide the top and the bottom by x, taking each end separately: moving x inside the square root brings out a minus sign when x is negative.
Working
For x > 0, x = √(x²), so dividing the root by x moves x² inside it.
For x < 0, x = −√(x²): dividing the root by x brings out a minus sign.
Two different horizontal asymptotes, one at each end.
Answer
The answer is y equals five halves on the right and negative five halves on the left.
Check
f(100) ≈ 2.51 and f(−100) ≈ −2.49, one near 5/2 and the other near −5/2.
Where this goes wrong
Writing √(4x²) = 2x at both ends, which gives y = 5/2 twice. A square root is never negative, so for x < 0 it is −2x, and the left-hand asymptote is y = −5/2.
