L’Hôpital’s rule practice question 24
Evaluate the limit.
What do and each tend to at 0? One round of the rule may not settle it, so recheck the form after each round.
After one application the quotient is , which is still .
Either apply the rule again (the derivative of is ), or write and cancel the factor .
A whole number.

Worked solution
Strategy
The 0/0 form survives the first application, so a second step is needed: the rule again, or the identity sec²x − 1 = (1 − cos²x)/cos²x and a cancellation.
Working
First application; sec²0 − 1 = 0 and 1 − cos 0 = 0, so the form is still 0/0.
Write sec²x as 1/cos²x and factor the difference of squares; near 0 but not at 0, 1 − cos x ≠ 0, so it cancels.
No longer indeterminate: substitute. A second application of the rule gives 2sec²x tan x / sin x = 2sec³x → 2, the same.
Answer
The answer is two.
Check
At x = 0.1 the quotient is about 2.009 and at x = 0.01 about 2.0001, closing in on 2.
Where this goes wrong
Stopping after the first application and reading (sec²x − 1)/(1 − cos x) at 0 as 0/0 = 0. The form is still indeterminate: simplify, or apply the rule again.
