Limits practice question 18
Evaluate the limit.
The top, , is not yet in a form the standard limit can use. Which identity changes that?
Use to rewrite the numerator as .
Write , and make the denominator match the argument: .

Worked solution
Strategy
The Pythagorean identity turns the numerator into the square of a sine. Then the standard limit sin(u)/u → 1 applies once the argument and the denominator match.
Working
From sin² + cos² = 1.
Multiply and divide by 9 = 3², so the denominator inside the bracket is 3x.
As x → 0, 3x → 0 as well, so the bracket tends to 1.
Answer
The answer is nine quarters.
Check
At x = 0.01 the quotient is about 2.2493, close to 9/4 = 2.25.
Where this goes wrong
Treating sin²(3x)/x² as the standard limit and getting 1/4. The 3 inside the sine comes out squared: sin(3x)/x tends to 3, so its square tends to 9.
