Limits practice question 26
Evaluate the limit.
Each root grows without bound, so the difference is an indeterminate form. What turns a difference of roots into a quotient, and what changes because is negative?
Multiply and divide by the conjugate . The numerator becomes .
To divide the denominator by , use for : .
A number.

Worked solution
Strategy
The conjugate turns the ∞ − ∞ form into a quotient. Then divide by x, remembering that x is negative, so taking x out of a square root brings a minus sign.
Working
Multiply and divide by the conjugate; the x² terms cancel.
For negative x, √(x²) = |x| = −x.
Cancel x; the terms in 1/x vanish.
Answer
The answer is negative 4.
Check
At x = −1000 the difference is √995,000 − √1,003,000 ≈ −4.002, close to −4.
Where this goes wrong
Writing √(x²) = x and getting +4, which is the limit as x → +∞. As x → −∞, √(x²) = −x, and that sign carries through to the answer.
